Marinated Mushrooms

June 28, 2020June 22, 2020 ~ Jim Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

Up here in Northern Wisconsin there appears to be a preference for all things pickled; especially in drinks as garnish: pickled Brussels sprouts, pickled radishes, pickled pickles and pickled mushrooms to mention a few. The other day after we finished a round of golf, we stopped in a the bar for our half-off cocktails. I … Continue reading Marinated Mushrooms

Banana Nut Bread – Version 2

June 27, 2020June 20, 2020 ~ Jim Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

I  am revising this recipe, which I posted earlier.  Just made this today and instead of using plain butter, I used browned butter and instead of granulated sugar I used brown sugar. It makes for a vast improvement in flavor. Here is the revised recipe.... Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter, softened (replace with browned butter, see … Continue reading Banana Nut Bread – Version 2

Camping???

June 26, 2020June 20, 2020 ~ Laura Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

Not to be judgemental but can this be termed "camping?" How many amenities does one need? How long will this person (people) be gone? I can't imagine how long it took to pack this car and boat. And, as we all know, items have a way of expanding during travel.  It will be humanly impossible … Continue reading Camping???

The Big Easel, Wabeno Wisconsin

June 25, 2020June 20, 2020 ~ Laura Kirkley ~ 3 Comments

The Big Easel, is, without a doubt, the most daring concept restaurant and enchanting environment in northern Wisconsin. All the restaurants in this part of Wisconsin are in the woods or near dairy farms, which serve the same food in the same formulaic manner.  They are called "Supper Clubs." You enter the restaurant find a seat … Continue reading The Big Easel, Wabeno Wisconsin

We get eaten alive by Wisconsin State Bird

June 24, 2020June 19, 2020 ~ Jim Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

Yesterday we decided to take a short trip to nearby Goodwin County Park. It has some pretty waterfalls and buildings built by the CCC in the 30's. We thought we would take a nice walk and enjoy the scenery. Paid the $5 fee and then were instantly attacked by vicious mosquitoes. We thought we would … Continue reading We get eaten alive by Wisconsin State Bird

The Oven from Hell

June 23, 2020June 19, 2020 ~ Laura Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

I do own the oven from hell in our lake house in Wisconsin. I could easily fire clay pots and do the glazing in that  machine. Jim did some calibrating today and determined it's heating to 650 degrees. All  dishes bakes at about 75 degrees over setting. Normal logic would move you to set the … Continue reading The Oven from Hell

Dunsmuir

June 22, 2020June 19, 2020 ~ James Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

Dunsmuir is easily one of my favorite small towns in America. I use every excuse to stop there when I am driving along the I-5. It's a great example of the kind of small town that there are fewer and fewer of in the US. While I think that that's really sad, I plan on … Continue reading Dunsmuir

Turntable Bay

June 21, 2020June 19, 2020 ~ James Kirkley ~ 2 Comments

Lake Shasta is an amazing place all on it's own. I haven't really gotten the opportunity to explore the lake itself too much but I plan to some day. But just about every time I drive by I have to stop at Turntable Bay. Turntable Bay is really just a small portion of Lake Shasta … Continue reading Turntable Bay

Waverley Country Club and Pioneer Cemetery

June 20, 2020June 19, 2020 ~ James Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

I live near a neighborhood called Waverly Heights in Sellwood. It's one of the nicer neighborhoods in the area outside of Lake Oswego. All I really knew about it was there was a golf course over there that I could see through the fence near my condo. There was also a boat landing further down … Continue reading Waverley Country Club and Pioneer Cemetery

It broke my heart to break these eggs!!!

June 19, 2020 ~ Laura Kirkley ~ Leave a comment

Our dinner this particular evening was New York Strip and a Spinach & Cheese Souffle. Jim had done the shopping and I hadn't seen the eggs until I opened the carton. They were so perfect and gorgeous in every way. It almost made me cry, too much beauty. Can't walk away without telling you how … Continue reading It broke my heart to break these eggs!!!
