Best Baguette

I wrote recently about Tito’s Burrito. It reminded me that there are a lot of great food options really close to Portland State University. If I’m really hungry I hit up Tito’s because they really pile on the food. If I’m not that hungry, or want to eat healthier, I go to Best Baguette.

Best Baguette is a classic Banh Mi shop. One of the things I like about it is it’s located right in the Karl Miller Center building where I take most of my classes. The have the classic banh Mi sandwich which is whatever kind of meat you want in a fresh baguette with lightly pickled carrots, cilantro, and fresh jalapeno. It’s simple and really tasty. I usually get the “special,” which has a variety of different meats on it.

They have a lot more too. All the usual choices for a Vietnamese snack shop, meaning they all look like they have no place in the same shop together but are actually completely necessary and delicious when tried together. You can get a Thai sweet tea with Boba and pair it’s sweetness with a meaty steamed bun. A Caesar salad with a strong Vietnamese coffee. All stuff you’d never consider getting together but are actually wonderful when paired.

I try not to spend too much time there. I easily could since in addition to the food being great it’s also very inexpensive. A basic sandwich runs a little north of four dollars. What’s better, it doesn’t fill me up so much that I get fat and sleepy, so I can eat one and continue to study.
