In all of my writing about the various and wonderful places to eat here in Portland, I came to realize that I had never actually written about the place that I eat most often. Near PSU campus is a block full of various good places to grab a bite. One of these places is my regular school drinking spot, the Cheerful Tortoise. The other is where I almost always go for a nice filling meal, Tito’s Burritos.
Being from Southern California, I can’t help but be picky about my Mexican food. I know how it’s supposed to be served and what it’s supposed to taste like. Tito’s manages to get the look and feel of a Southern California Mexican food place just right. Which, isn’t to say it’s a nice place. The menu is on a back lit board behind the cash register, it’s covered in hand make corrections and price changes done with a sharpie. The little decoration there is is sombreros hanging from the wall. The only soundtrack is from a TV constantly tuned to Spanish Language television. There’s a salsa bar covered in all the best house made salsas. It’s basically perfect.
They’re known for their burritos obviously. That’s what most students will grab between classes. But I like a sit down meal so I almost always get the Chorizo Con Huevos. I find it hard to get anything else it’s so good. But I have tried a few other things on the menu since I have been there very often.
The Chorizo Con Huevos is what I usually get so I’ll talk about it a bit. It’s simply scrambled eggs with chorizo, peppers, and onions. It comes with rice and beans, fresh jalapenos, pico de gallo, and your choice of corn or flour tortillas. It’s simple and delicious, but most importantly you get ALOT of food for very little. I always come away from a meal there full and sleepy. Probably not the best thing to do before sitting through class…
