Taking a “Strategic Day”

Tactics is knowing what to do when there is something to do. Strategy is knowing what to do when there is nothing to do.  Quote by Savielly Tartakover.

Wrapping paper stacked about 4 feet high in our living room

Jim and I are pretending to be strategizing today. We have managed to trash the house to the point that we don’t know what to do. We’re completely frozen. We started the day working on the Damage Claim forms for the move. That led us to unpacking the  large paintings just to make sure they were not damaged. So far so good, huh? I started it first when my brain got jammed-up, I kind of meandered away and went to our office pretending to do something important. Pretty soon Jim comes into the room and sits at his desk, reading something very important on his computer on the topic of moving into a house. Then he begins a project of ripping CDs to a home sound system.

Just one of several boxes of CDs Jim is in the process of ripping.

We’ve set up our office with “Partner” desks so we sit facing each other, we love it. But today not so much. We haven’t engaged in any eye contact. I can only speak for myself but I feel guilty for skipping out of work. I’m suspecting Jim feels the same, but it’s one of those things that if you don’t talk about it, it’s not happening.

However, after sitting at my desk for the afternoon I’m finding my brain is un-stuck, stepping away has given my brain a small mental vacation. So I’m recommending that everyone take a “Strategic Day” now and then and don’t feel guilty about it.
